Top 5 Destinations for Mountain Activities in the USA

Nothing beats spending free time in the mountains, facing personal challenges and enjoying the natural beauty of the great outdoors. There are an endless number of activities that can be enjoyed up in the highest peaks, and the top 5 destinations for mountain activities in the USA are described below.

Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park is a popular destination for lovers of the great outdoors all the year through, and boasts spectacular waterfalls, imposing granite cliffs, and a great deal of biological diversity. In terms of leisure activities, there is a great deal to do, with hiking being perhaps the most common form of enjoying time here. Over 800 miles of trails criss-cross through the park, ranging from easy strolls through to more arduous multi-day hikes. Other popular recreational activities include climbing, cycling, and in the winter skiing and snowboarding.

Park City

Skiers and snowboarders flock to park City, in Utah, for its fabulous snow and slopes. In fact, the area is so good for skiing, that it played host to many skiing and snowboarding events for the 2002 Winter Olympics. It goes without saying that most people head here to spend time out on the slopes, but there are also other ways in which the mountains can be enjoyed, such as taking out snowmobiles, dog sleds, or even looking down on the mountains from inside a hot air balloon—how awesome would that be!

Joshua Tree National Park

Located in California, The Joshua Tree National park is a veritable playground for climbers of all ability levels. There are quite literally thousands of named climbing routes and thousands more waiting to be discovered. Most of the climbing routes are short as the various rocks are rarely taller than a couple of hundred feet, but this certainly does not detract from the fun, and also means that there is something for everyone here. The park isn’t just popular with climbers though, as there are several hiking trails here also, as well as a number of campgrounds.

North Georgia Mountains

Anyone looking for a family friendly mountain destination in the USA should definitely consider visiting the North Georgia Mountains. In terms of activities, hiking, fishing, swimming, tubing and camping can all be enjoyed in the area, and there are a number of natural attractions such as Tallulah Gorge to visit. There is a regular rota of festivals, and quaint shops and restaurants offer the chance to take a break from the wilderness should it be desired.

Great Smoky Mountains

The ‘Smokies’, as they are more commonly known, rise along the Tennessee and North Carolina border, and are host to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which is one of the most visited national parks in the USA. It is possible to try a huge range of activities whilst on vacation in the Smokies, and in particular, anyone interested in kayaking, whitewater rafting, hiking and biking will hugely enjoy their time here.
