More Perks are United Airlines way to attract more passangers

Air travel demand for the prime summer time vacation season is robust, which supports greater fares, but United Airlines aims to bolster other sources of income by selling new solutions and services, the chief executive of the airline's parent United Continental Holdings stated on Thursday.

Speaking to reporters following a speech in Chicago, Jeff Smisekmentioned the organization is preparing to unveil some new offerings now that it has integrated its reservations process with that of its 2010 merger partner Continental Airlines.

The airline sector, battered for years by soaring fuel expenses and financial  weakness that drained travel demand, has relied far more heavily in current years on charges for services like bag checks, food, entertainment, seat choiceas along with other perks.

"We also obviously, are expanding the ancillary items and services we are going to sell that clients will purchase. We've held in abeyance a great deal of that," Smisek stated, declining to say what the corporation planned to provide next.

I'm not allowed to speak about it, but they are going to be great  and they're going to be cool," he said.

When pressed on the nature of the offerings, Smisek pointed to yet another United service known as  Fare Lock, that enables clients to  pay a fee to reserve a booking and lock within a fare til they're prepared to commit to it.

United Airlines will be the world's largest  airline. It was formed from the merger of United Airlines and Continental Airlines. The new enterprise  is based in Chicago and run by Smisek, who was chief executive of Continental  prior to the merger.

The U.S. airline market has managed to pull itself out of a steep downturn last decade by downsizing and selling fewer seats, which enabled it to increase fares.

The mergers of United with Continental and Delta Air Lines with Northwest Airlines to form a new| Delta also helped stabilize these carriers.

However the pricing power that airlines have enjoyed during the past year could diminish this year if passengers, who're currently paying greater gasoline costs, resist paying extra for airline tickets. Airlines|generally see their |greatest income in  the busy summer time leisure travel season.

On Wednesday, United matched a fare increase by rival Delta, based on FareCompare.com. Smisek declined to comment directly on the outlook for additional fare hikes.

"I believe we're seeing great| demand," Smisek stated "I'm comfy with what we're seeing."Last month, United adopted the reservation technique of its merger partner Continental Airlines last month, triggering computer glitches that resulted in flight delays, faulty kiosks and jammed telephone lines.

The project coincided with modifications to United's frequent flier system, spurring a flood of |telephone calls, resulting in waits to speak to consumer service agents. United faced consumer backlash more than these issues, but Smisek mentioned wait times are a lot shorter and these operations are returning to regular.

He said the difficulty stemmed from attempting numerous modifications to complicated customer-facing processes at once.

"We decided to have a single open-heart surgery, not 5," he stated.

United is set to report its first-quarter earnings next week. Analysts anticipate airlines to become largely unprofitable for the quarter, but profitable  for the year. Southwest Airlines and bankrupt AMR Corp, the parent of American Airlines, posted quarterly losses on Thursday.

Shares of United Continental were up 1.1 percent at $22.95 on the New York Stock Exchange.
