The History of "The Rock" (Alcatraz)

Alcatraz Penitentiary has a rich history with famous inmates and daring tales of escape. There is much most people don't know about Alcatraz and its history. Alcatraz functioned as a working prison from 1861 until 1971 and housed some of the most famous prisoners including Al Capone, George "Machine Gun" Kelly, Robert Stroud, Roy Gardner, Henry Young, and Alvin Karpis.

Alcatraz had many escape attempts ranging from as early as 1936 and as late as 1962. Most escape attempts were unsuccessful but there were a few where the inmates escaped into the San Francisco Bay and were never seen again. The escape of Frank Morris and the brothers Johan and Clarence Anglin even had a movie mad about it staring Clint Eastwood.

Alcatraz Penitentiary is a great place for anyone to visit who is in the San Francisco area. Take the time to visit "The Rock" and it will be an experience you never forget.
