Getting to Know Switzerland

One of the most beautiful countries in the world, Switzerland has been the dream destination for many tourists for decades. With a population of approximately 7.5 million, it is situated in central Europe; East of France and North of Italy. With an area of almost 16,000 square miles it is a relatively small and mountainous country. The capital city of Switzerland is Bern, yet the country’s two economic centres are Geneva and Zurich.

At any time, as you travel around the country, you will hit many different climate conditions; the continental climate in the Alps tends to show the greatest extremes between summer and winter whereas Mid-August to late October generally has fairly settled weather, and is a good period for hiking trips. The high elevation of the country causes lower temperatures, and because of its mountainous character it is not uncommon to move from cold and rainy weather to a warm, clear day in just a few minutes!

Freezing temperatures usually occur between December and early march, although the temperature rarely falls below 41˚f.

Visiting Switzerland

Switzerland is a truly unique ‘adventure playground’ for all those who want more than just a seaside; it is made up of three basic topographical areas: The Swiss Alps, The Swiss Plateau and the Jura Mountains. The Alps comprise roughly 60% of the country’s total area, making it the second most alpine country, after Austria.

Hotels and tourist facilities started to be build mid-century; the glacier express takes travellers through the Alps by train and journeys from San Moritz to the ski resort Zermatt. Sports are an integral part of the Swiss lifestyle; fittingly for a country made of tall, snowy mountains, Switzerland boasts dozens of major ski resorts and has an extensive system of marked cross-country ski trails. It’s no surprise that Swiss athletes have performed with excellence at every level of winter sports competition and notably and the winter Olympic games.

Switzerland has something special or everyone, whether your idea of an ideal vacation is hiking in a world of breath-taking vistas, or pampering yourself in the lap of luxury. Switzerland may be neutral, but it is certainly not flavourless!
