Big Five Safari in the Pilanesberg National Park

The Pilanesberg National Park is one of those underrated safari destinations in the beautiful country of South Africa. As it was only declared a national park in 1976, the area is still making a name for itself as a great safari destination; however this is not for lack of big-five game viewing in the area, in fact quite the opposite is true.

This stunning reserve is located in a malaria free area and is the 8th largest park in South Africa, covering a total area of 50 000 hectares. As the Pilanesberg is situated only two hours from the bustling city of Johannesburg and is located next door to the popular Sun City Casino and Entertainment Resort, it is a great destination for both local and international travelers.

The Pilanesberg National Park centers on the crater of an extinct volcano and is thus home to a unique landscape of ancient volcanic rocks that have formed into three concentric hills. Here visitors can enjoy game drives in a park with a spectacular environment of forested valleys, vast bushveld pains and mountain crops which are all home to a sense variety of animal and bird life.

In 1979 the reserve was fenced and a variety of game species were re-introduced to the area which is now home to over 7 000 animals including 24 large game species including Africa’s famous big five.

The Pilanesberg National Park is a favourite destination for photographers and travelers who want an affordable, easy-to-reach holiday destination. Here travelers can indulge in a nights stay at a luxury lodge and enjoy a guided game drive throughout the reserve or families can opt for something a little bit more affordable and self-drive through the reserve.

A number of other exciting activities are also available for guests to enjoy within the park including guided walks, elephant back safaris and horse riding safaris. In addition to these the nearby Sun City is great for a combination holiday with the resort’s valley of the waves creating the beach part of an affordable bush and beach break for the family.
