Christmas at Alton Towers

As theme parks are generally closed during the winter in the UK you may think that Alton Towers is off the menu in the build up to Christmas but you would be wrong! The roller coasters may be off limits but much of the resort is open and there is some great fun to be had for all the family on a short break.

The Breaks

Alton Towers offers special Christmas breaks during the festive season with all inclusive deals available at very reasonable rates. Your stay will include accommodation, breakfast, evening meal, entrance to the park and a session in the water park and the hotels lay on evening entertainment too. There are two hotels to choose from – the Alton Towers Hotel and Splash Landings. The two properties are connected and so all the facilities on offer are available to every guest. Splash Landings, however, is the better choice if you have kids with you and the Aton Towers Hotel is more suitable for adult only groups.

The Park

Some sections of the theme park are open but not the major rides and attractions. If you are looking to experience new coaster The Smiler then you will have to wait until the spring but there is still plenty to keep you occupied. The park is copiously decorated with numerous Christmas trees and the staff are usually full of festive cheer. Several kids rides are open, you can shop in the main store near the entrance and there are reindeer to meet and feed.

The Water Park

The indoor water park is the perfect diversion on a cold winter’s day with plenty of slides and a pleasant pool housed in a tropical climate. The star of the show is the Master Blaster which propels you on jets of water all around the building on a roller coaster of a slide. If you are feeling brave the outdoor section of the attraction is also opened for part of the day including the slides. The water is reasonably warm in the outdoor pool and very pleasant in the Jacuzzi but it can be extremely chilly if you climb out of the pools to access the slides!

Mini Golf

The Alton Towers mini golf course is open during the winter for some extra fun. The course is excellent with holes themed on the park’s rides. You will pay an additional charge to play but the course is close to the hotels and great fun for all the family.

After the excitement of the day the buffet restaurants in each hotel serve evening meals and you can choose to dine at either regardless of where you are staying. I have to say that my experience of these places is that the food is not great but there is a decent selection with plenty to appeal to children. You can follow your meal by relaxing in the hotel bars where live entertainment is laid on. There is music and dance at the Alton Towers Hotel and shows aimed at the kids at Splash Landings. It is a very pleasant way to cap off a great trip!
