Bovec in the Fall

As the days grow shorter and the temperature falls, the more obvious attractions of Bovec become less appealing. It may still be possible to go white water rafting on the Soča and to enjoy a hike in the Julian Alps but on colder days you may feel like spending your time on other activities. Happily there are some really great things to do in the area at this time of year.

The Tolmin Gorges

Tolmin is a pleasant 40 minute drive down the valley from Bovec and just outside of the town it is possible to visit the gorges until the second week of November. The Tolmin Gorges form the southernmost entrance to the Triglav National park and can be accessed by a series of trails which were constructed in the 1950’s and are well maintained but steep in places. The highlights of your visit will be the fallen rock known as the “Bear’s Head” which is wedged high up in a ravine and the Devil’s Bridge 60m above the blue waters of the Tolminska River. Close to the Devil’s Bridge you will find a thermal spring with water temperatures of 20 degrees. The Tolmin Gorges are a very pleasant walk, if arduous in places, and the entrance fee at the time of writing is a very reasonable 4 Euro.

Adrenalin Park Bovec

If you had something more adventurous than a walk in mind then you should consider paying a visit to the Adrenalin Park Bovec. This is a Zip Lining course constructed on the slopes of Mount Kanin and offers guests the opportunity to traverse four lines at speeds of up to 40mph suspended 130 metres above the ground. Your visit begins with a scenic drive up to the start point in a 4X4 vehicle before you are hooked to the lines and off you fly! If you have time to take them in there are magnificent views over the valley and down to the Soča and your ride is 1.5 miles long! You don’t need any experience to give zip lining a go and there are plenty of staff on hand to see that you have a safe journey. Reservations are advisable whenever you want to fly and are essential at the weekends. Wear casual clothes like jeans or hiking trousers and sturdy footwear for your flight.

Horseback Riding

Alpin Action sports agency in Bovec have their own riding stables offering beautiful rides through the Soča valley and up into the mountains. Trips can be anything from 2 hours to a full day and are tailored to the ability of the party. No experience is necessary to take part but it obviously gives the tour more scope if you can ride. This is a great way to see the surrounding countryside and refreshments are provided on longer trips.

The Fall

Although Bovec is best known for its fabulous water sports and the delights of the Julian Alps there is still plenty to enjoy in the region later in the season. This is a town with something for everyone all year round.
